Jean Hetherington and her husband Robert got their first bulldog together in 1961 and began breeding in 1964.
Since then, the Hetheringtons have finished more than 100 bulldog champions and have shown a number of the breed’s most notable dogs to record - breaking wins, including three Bests In Specialty Show at the Bulldog Club of America’s annual national event — in 1966 with a multiple - specialty - winning dog from their first litter, Champion Hetherbull Arrogance, in 1979 with Champion Dingman’s Hunk of Hetherbull, bred by Joyce and Karl Dingman and owned and exhibited by the Hetheringtons, and in 1988 with Champion Hetherbull’s Bounty’s Frigate, a multiple specialty - winner and top - producing stud who broke breed records with 52 all - breed Best In Show wins.
While campaigning “Frigate,” Mrs. Hetherington won the 1990 Iams - Kennel Review Owner - Handler Award. That same year, Frigate won the Quaker Oats Award for the most American Kennel Club Non - Sporting Group wins. Champion Hetherbull Arrogant Ronald, bred by the Hetheringtons, won the Quaker Oats Award in 1989.
Mrs. Hetherington is recognized in the Bulldog Club of America’s Breeders Hall of Fame, with 14 Hetherbull bulldogs listed in the BCA’s Producers Hall of Fame. Champion Hetherbull Arrogant Lazarus, UD, CDX, CD, was the breed’s first finished champion to earn the Utility Dog title, earning “Laz” a place in the BCA’s Obedience Hall of Fame.
Mrs. Hetherington has been licensed by the AKC to judge bulldogs since 1980 and more recently, added Boston terriers, French bulldogs and Lhasa Apsos to the AKC breeds she is approved to judge. In addition to membership in several all - breed clubs, she has held numerous offices in bulldog clubs at the local, division and national levels.
Mrs. Hetherington was on the American Kennel Club staff as director of special services from 1996 until her retirement in 2005. She is author of Bulldog, published in 2005 by Kennel Club Books as part of their Breeders’ Best series.
In addition to judging regularly at specialty and all - breed shows, Mrs. Hetherington is still involved in breeding and showing bulldogs in conformation. She lives in North Carolina.
